MUSLIM SOCIETY: EMPOWERNMENT

However, not all Muslim clerics are happy; some have already slammed it

Some Muslim women have frowned on it, saying it failed to address triple talaq, polygamy and the marriage of minors. “The model nikahnama does put together some guidelines, but makes none of these mandatory,” said AIMWPLB President Shaista Amber. This was where it grossly erred. The new code rejects talaq through SMS, e-mail and phone and video conferencing. According to it, talaq, to be valid, needed to be spread over three months to give the couple time to reflect and review. It has a 17-point hidayatnama (Shariat marriage guidelines) and an 8-point section on the talaq process.

Under it, any forceful nikah is unacceptable. It also forbids dowry, thus “maintaining the equipoise,” according to Amber, who has been warmly endorsed by Zeenat Shoukat Ali, Chairperson of Wisdom Foundation.

Serious disadvantage

The top-20% take everything away & in turn leave the bottom 80% with nothing, forever placing them at a serious disadvantage. In a democracy like ours, if this does not get upturned, the budget loses its essential quintessence...

It is an open secret that nothing like that has ever happened, as then the state of affairs would not have been as miserable as it stands today. Post independence, Union Budgets have always been a low key affair (relatively speaking!); but then, all this had gone in for a complete image makeover since 1991 when our current Prime Minister and then Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, made budget a platform to announce economic reforms packages. Then onwards, each and every gentleman from North Block has tried his best to blatantly utilise this platform to gain political mileage, to such an extent that the budget at times delivered reckless policy packages, only appeasing the ruling political party’s stakeholders, with no concern to the vast majority. As a result, over the years, the budget, which ideally should put up with serious stock taking exercise(s), has been reduced to a weak document with persuasive political overtones.

What is amazing is the manner in which Finance Ministers, over the years, have been baselessly allocating invaluable financial resources, which are hard earned tax payers’ money, to earn brownie points from a few sections in connivance with popular media!! In fact, over the last few budgets, it became all the more evident that various budgetonomics of almost all FMs were more to gratify select top sections of the society. This can be corroborated by the fact that in almost all pre-budget talks and consultations, the FM talks to the big corporate and industry associations and rarely to any social watch group and representative of budget advocacy organisations. It’s very clear that the society and social sector representatives are not asked for any significant input or invited for active participation in either pre-budget discussions or textual proposals. The whole concept of budget for aam adami is nothing but a big farce, which has got lost somewhere in the crowd of big lobbyists. Consider this: The manner in which the fertilizer policy has been structured is simply to allow companies to profit, and not farmers in anyway. The resultant economic packages (that aim at reducing the budget deficit) have been consequently reducing the social sector allocations and expenditures.

No money for your dreams, honey!!

In between the extremes of private equity and microfinance, the common man is still deprived of money to start a simple business

At the annual ritual of Kolkata Book Fair that has become an impeccable part of the Bengali culture, one would often come across dozens of art students, from the city’s fine arts colleges, selling paintings for pittance of Rs.30-Rs.40. Looking at those creative indulgences, many of which might have got tagged as masterpieces if they were to find a place among scores of art galleries which are raking millions now, one would easily conclude that if there were ever a need to find an ideal example of the quintessential slip between the cup and the lip, India is the ideal sojourn for that. India has often been the land of contrast. A land where many a paradoxes co-exists, be it feminism and female foeticide or over-supply of funds, coupled with lack of funds for new entrepreneurs.

In last few years, no other words probably have got as much mileage the way ‘microfinance’ & ‘private equity’ have entered the mental lexicon of upwardly mobile Indians. So while the legendary Md. Yunus has become a household name, the daily bombardment of news of how private equity investors are making strategic investments in Indian companies and how their crucial involvement is helping India Inc., to have a better foothold in global biz, has also become a routine affair. Assocham forecasts that private equity (PE) funding in India is expected to be $48 billion by 2010. Such forecasts are justified as in 2007 itself, the private equity investments in India have been nearly $17 billion, in a year when the total value of cross-border deals involving Indian companies was worth more than $70 billion. Similarly, microfinance also got much impetus, thanks to the incredible feats of Md. Yunus. In a country where about half of its population still don’t have access to banking, advent of microfinance is a boon. So on one hand, there’s advent of global private equity funds like Carlyle, Blackstone, Warburg Pincus, ChrysCapital & Temasek into India, and domestically too there have been sprouting of such equities like IDFC Private Equity, Infinity Venture Capital Fund, UTI Venture Funds & ICICI Venture, on the other hand, many conventional banks like Bank of Baroda, SBI, ICICI, Yes Bank & even ABN AMRO have been foraying into microfinance. Reports state that by 2010, amount of microfinance in India would be about $3 billion.

Bullets on the way to ballots

The post-poll violence in Kenya is nothing but pure political greed

It seems ice has finally started to melt in Nairobi. After unsuccessful attempts by Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General & African Union Chairman, John Kufuor, to broker peace, EU Commissioner Louis Michel has finally persuaded President Kibaki to meet Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Raila Odinga, soon. The high profile delegation also announced that it would await the outcome of dialogue between President Kibaki & the ODM leader before deciding its future course of action. Meanwhile, Michel said as a friend of Kenya, the European Union (EU) was optimistic that the present political state of affairs would be resolved through political dialogue. Meanwhile, Peter Anyang Nyong’o, ODM Secretary General said that ODM & its partisans would continue their peaceful passive resistance until the Kibaki Government shows that it wants dialogue to resolve the crisis. He also accused Kenyan police of killing many demonstrators in several cities by using live ammunition.

Meet the Kapoors

A legacy where the artistically superior meets the commercially viable, and yet delivers...

One is the son of a retired college principal while the other is the son of one of the finest theatre personalities of India. One topped engineering in Delhi and then pursued acting while the other dreamt of becoming an actor for as long as he can remember. One has barely ever shaken a leg on-screen while the other has taken dance lessons from Shiamak Davar. But one aspect that is common to both these fine actors is their ability to deliver stellar performances and the knack to better the same with each movie. Yes, this is the father and son duo of Pankaj Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor.

Having completed his engineering with first rank from New Delhi in 1973, Pankaj Kapoor joined the prestigious National School of Drama in 1976, where he bagged the Best Actor Award in his batch. After doing theatre for four years, his silver-screen break came with Arohan, after which he grabbed the role of Mahatama Gandhi’s secretary, Pyarelal in Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi. He then acted in a variety of films like Kundan Shah’s comedy classic Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s suspense thriller Khamosh, Shyam Benegal’s Mandi, Mohan Joshi’s Hazir Ho, Mrinal Sen’s Khandhar, and then came his much talked about characterisation of an educated cross-border terrorist in Roja. He also did a handful of television series that he is probably remembered most for, like Karamchand and recently as Musaddi Lal from Office Office. In the days when parallel cinema was at its peak, in 70s-80s, actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Farukh Sheikh and Pankaj Kapoor carved a niche for themselves. This versatile actor stayed true to his roots in theatre by acting in and directing more than 74 plays and serials. But with Raakh, he bagged what he claims his dearest award of all, his first National Award in 1989.

ASSET: MIND & MANPOWER

The real assets are perhaps those we overlook...

No wonder that Japan and the US are some of the richest nations of the world as they have allowed entrepreneurs to unleash the power of their minds and catapult the society to a higher paradigm.

Today, an operating system, a mobile phone or a micro processor can be called wealth but the real wealth are those whose gave shape to them. In the same league population was considered to be a major liability. But of late, two of the most populous countries of the world, China and India have realised that if they have ever done anything worthwhile, that was to nurture such huge population. In an era of market economy, the shrinking population and saturated market of the West, leaves the MNCs with only one choice, i.e. to invest and market in India and China. Not just as markets, India’s and China’s population can be considered wealthfor the incredible source of manpower they have become for the world. While the Chinese have specialised in being the manufacturer of the world, the Indians have specialised in the after sales service of the same.

But that this population doesn’t want to get restricted in it, is vindicated by the Tatas and Lenovos calling shots in global acquisitions. It doesn’t end here only. The biggest wealth of this world is still a calm mind and hope nurtured by the principle of self actualisation of East.Even wealthy West has accepted it. Against all odds, mankind still dream to live another day and wither the next Tsunami. So long this wealth of hope remains, other assets will work too.

I had a dream...

Most of us are caught in an endless cycle – waking up late, driving like a maniac in a mad rush to reach the office before the clock strikes nine, slogging all day long, listening to the endless rebukes of the boss, heading home late only to be received by a dejected family upset by your neglect. In this race of life, it’s easy to forget ourselves, our dreams, our passions. When growing up, many of us loved to paint, to dance, act, write, sing... But as we grew up, the realities of life took over. Very few of us allow our creative side to dictate our careers and most of us opt for professional degrees that lead to beefy paychecks. But what if we could enjoy the best of both worlds?

There are people who work five days a week and on weekends they pursue their passions. For example, Dramatech, a 25-year old group, was founded by three alumni of IIT Delhi in 1984. “While at IIT, we had a very strong dramatics club wherein we used to call a director from the industry to direct our annual plays in Hindi and English, and because of that grounding we had a very strong interest in dramatics, which carried on even when we passed out of the institute. Later on, Dramatech grew to attract other students from Delhi University, IIM etc. It became a place for the transient population, the young population in Delhi, to go and do theatre. This is an amateur group and nobody is paid anything, neither the director nor the actors. Everybody is mostly working or studying in college or even school. People do it entirely as a hobby, but we do try to put up a good level of theatre, near professional standards you may say,” says Ravi Raj Sagar, who directs plays for the group and otherwise works as a Marketing Communications Manager with Hewlett-Packard. Most of the people in Dramatech are working with renowned companies like Pepsico, HP, KPMG etc. “The kinds of people we draw are people who are working professionally as executives and now many of them are senior managers, corporates and in the government, so the remuneration motive is not present in their case,” adds Ravi. The motivating factor for them is their passion and not money, which is why they don’t mind taking time out every Saturday and Sunday. Hello Dolly (in Hindi) is their latest production, which debuted on 14 November 2009, and its shows are also being held in December and January at the Sri Ram Centre in New Delhi.
